Supporting Safer Motherhood in Balkh

The German Federal Ministry of Foreign Office (GFFO) and ADH, is providing free ultrasound and essential maternal health services to vulnerable communities across Balkh Province.
Through six Basic Health Centers, female medical doctors provide ultrasound services to an average of 10 patients per day at each facility, with particular attention to pregnant women, including those in their third trimester.
Ultrasound examinations help healthcare providers identify potential pregnancy complications, including breech presentation, abnormal amniotic fluid levels, fetal growth abnormalities, abnormal placental location, and other obstetric risks that may require timely management or referral.
The facilities also use patient monitoring equipment during postnatal care to assess vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse rate, respiratory rate, and oxygen saturation, helping health workers identify warning signs and provide appropriate care or timely referral.
These services are provided free of charge to support access to essential maternal healthcare for IDPs, returnees, and host communities in Maza-e-Sharif.
